2 Definition • A risk is a potential problem, which is characterized by the likelihood that an event, hazard, threat, or situation will occur and its undesirable consequence (IEEE 2001]. 2 3 Risk • This term means the probability that a software project will experience undesirable events, such as schedule delays, cost overruns, or outright cancellation. • Risk is proportional to size and inversely proportional to skill and technology levels. – In considering aspects of risk for large systems, the risk of schedule slippage approaches 100% since most such systems are late.
